I’m Matthew, the face behind Mortgage Okanagan. I want to share a bit about myself so you can get to know me better. I truly believe that the mortgage process fosters a relationship, and it’s not just a transaction.
So, who am I outside the office?
I was born in Creston, British Columbia and moved to Kelowna when I was 6 years old. I changed elementary schools several times, but settled and went to KSS to complete my high school education.
After high school, I decided I would attend Okanagan College to become a Civil Engineering Technologist. I spent several years in this industry and eventually decided that I wanted a career more forward-facing with the public. I entered the cell phone sales industry, where I advanced to a management position. During this time, I focused on developing my people skills, problem-solving abilities, and forming relationships with customers. From there, I decided to study to become a mortgage broker.
The reason I chose to become a mortgage broker was it gave me the ability to use my technical knowledge and my people skills together for a career with a higher ceiling.
Since making that decision, I’ve been a mortgage broker since September 2011. As a licensed broker, I have to redo my licensing every 2 years, which means I remain informed on mortgage guidelines and rules. I’ve gotten people mortgages across Canada and have worked with my fair share of unique situations.
Family is my everything.
Outside of work, I am a family man. My wife and I have a 4-year-old daughter and a 2-year-old son.
Six years ago, we bought in the Glenmore neighbourhood of Kelowna. We love that Glenmore provides everything we need while still being biking distance to downtown. We’re excited to watch our family grow and move into the school years before we know it.
At our house, you’ll find me gardening outside, taking care of our chickens and spending time on the trampoline with the kids. Our family enjoys neighbourhood walks to the duck pond and walking to our local Glenmore Garden Market, which we frequent regularly.
I enjoy going to Gneiss to rock climb, and I play softball in the spring, summer and fall!
Community involvement.
I am a people person and love being around good people. Since 2013, I’ve been a part of the Kelowna chapter of Junior Chamber International (JCI). JCI is one of Kelowna’s premier community service groups, offering opportunities for young people to grow personally and professionally while contributing positively to the community.
I decided to join JCI because they have the most motivated and friendly group of young professionals in Kelowna and allow me to easily give back through their events. Throughout the years, I’ve been the lead on many events like our annual snowbowl Super Bowl event, as well as leading the farm project at Helen’s Acres. This farming project helped provide food for families in need of fresh produce and was extremely fulfilling to take part in every week.
This past February, I was awarded a senatorship in the organization, which gives me a lifetime membership.
Looking ahead.
There is so much to look forward to in my life, in my professional career and my family life. I truly love the job I have, as I get to help others accomplish their dream of buying a home! It’s rewarding work, and I am always using my mind, which I appreciate.
I’m looking forward to what our home will look like in 5 years and how our kids will grow and evolve in those years.
